Stink Bugs Stink

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Slow, stinky creepy crawlers, Brown Marmorated Stink Bugs first showed up around here about 15 years ago in a shipping container from Asia. Now they're in your house, out in fields damaging crops and bugging our gardens too. In July, I found loads of their little developing nymphs crawling on my Columbine seed pods so I cut them all down and put them in the trash. Hundreds of stink bugs gone - thousands more where they came from.

They've even inspired local entrepreneurs to design traps for indoors and out - but it's hard to make a dent in these stink bug numbers. Pesticides aren't very effective, and they kill good insects too that we need to prey upon bad bugs like these!

So next time you're grossed out by a stink bug, let it be a potent reminder of how important it is to keep alien species like the brown marmorated stink bug - and the emerald ash borer - from invading the US. Because once they're on the loose here, they're nearly impossible to stop.
