New Report: Fewer College Students Finish In Four Years
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - A new report on how many students complete college has been released and the averages are nowhere near a passing grade. The information was tallied from information released by state governors on their state's colleges and universities.
The report issued by the non-profit Complete College America, includes data from 33 states. In Pennsylvania, 32 percent of full-time students and just over 6 percent of part-time students reached a bachelor's degree in four years.
Stan Jones, President of Complete College America, said the system works against them.
"It's really not designed for (an increasing amount of) students who are part-time, who work, who have children, who are the first in their family to go to college, who didn't come from a good high school or don't get good academic preparation," Jones said. "College really isn't designed for them and that's what we're really concerned about."
He says another problem is students are not counseled correctly on what courses to take to stay on track so they can graduate on time. The report concludes that the longer a student takes to get a four-year degree the less chance that student will be successful.
New Jersey and Delaware did not release their information.
