Temple University Helps Students Trim The Waste, And The Waist

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Temple University today launched a program aimed at cutting down on wasted food and, perhaps, helping to prevent the "freshman fifteen."

For college students with so many cafeteria choices in so much abundance, it's hard not to load up on the eats.  But most students can't, and don't, eat it all.

Dietician Julie Rhule says that's where Temple's "Waste Not" Project comes in.

"Today we're having a 'Weigh Your Waste' project to educate students about how much waste they produce daily and encourage them to be aware of this due to the environmental impact that it can have," she told KYW Newsradio.

All that wasted bounty can add up to a bundle of money -- not to mention the fact that food service waste is the biggest contributor to landfills.

The program is also a teaching opportunity, Rhule says, to help students make smarter food choices.

Dominique Spooner, a junior, has already done that on her own.

"I always knew that we wasted a lot of food," she says.  "I used to do it too.  Now I realize if there's something I want, I'm going to eat it and I'm going to leave."
