Healthy School Lunch Choices

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Many children get lunch as a part of the school day and there is no doubt that schools are far more aware of healthy food choices than they used to be. But whether or not your child is getting food at school or you are making it at home and letting them brown bag it, there are certain staples you should make part of the lunch.

One option is to have healthy snacks like cheese sticks, nuts, vegetables or yogurt. There are other things you can do as well. Create a colorful wrap instead of the sandwich or make a sandwich with whole wheat bread. Don't include cookies and cakes and pies. Try to have healthier food choices.

Or, you can take the approach that I recommend for many people who are dieting. Perhaps once a week include cookies or cake but don't make it a regular choice. And if your children do get their lunch at school, ask them what food choices they made that day. If you take an interest, they will be more interested.
