Positively Philadelphia: A Lovely, New Park on the Race Street Pier

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - It was a beautiful Saturday, and people were out enjoying the new Race Street Pier.   It's been open since May, and in that short time it's become a favorite spot for many.

"We usually come out here for our morning walks and our afternoon walks," said Ryan (below), who was there with his dog, Breezy.  "She likes the water and likes to be able to look at the ducks that swim in the water.  It's a lot of fun."

Deborah, from Old City (below), was out with her two dogs and having a fine time as well.

"This is Riley, and this is Sullivan," she said by way of introduction.   "It's become such a great community spot, because in Old City we really don't have a park."

Steve and Carolyn are from Northern Liberties.

(Steve:)  "We're having a picnic.  Brought out food.  We're saying goodbye to some family members who are headed back to the Midwest, so we thought we'd do a picnic down here."

(Carolyn:)  "We bring our breakfast here on weekend mornings -- such a peaceful, pleasant place."

The pier is the first of a number of projects planned for the Delaware River.

"I'm getting my run in before it gets too hot," said Marian, who had run over from Fishtown.

Before she headed home she rested for a moment in the tiered seating terraces that  link the upper and lower levels of the park and create a place  at the end of the pier for viewing, gathering, and contemplation.

"I absolutely love it," she said.  "It's my favorite place to come to.  It's great."

And that's Positively Philadelphia!
