Philadelphia D.A. Talks Tough To Violent Flash Mobbers And Their Parents

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Philadelphia's no-nonsense response to flash mob violence includes tough penalties for offenders, and accountability-or-else for their parents.

Philadelphia District Attorney Seth Williams says authorities will deal with flash mob offenders without any breaks.

"There will be no diversionary programs, no type of community service for people who randomly commit acts of violence in our city, in any neighborhood. People have to know that," Williams said.

But, echoing the Mayor, Williams says parents must be held accountable and responsible for their children.

"So, I have asked my legislation and policy unit to begin working with the state legislature and city council so we can begin to hold more parents civilly and possibly criminally responsible for the criminal acts, the violent acts of their children who are out violating curfew and abuse fellow humans."

Williams also said the law could require them to get the help they need, possibly parenting classes. But if the parents do not cooperate, then there could be criminal penalties.
