Somber Ceremony To Honor Former Philadelphia Mayor Frank Rizzo

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Saturday marks the 20th anniversary of the death of former Philadelphia Mayor Frank Rizzo, and his life will be honored with a ceremony at 12:30 p.m. in Center City.

“We the citizens of Philadelphia picked ourselves up, dusted ourselves off… and now stand ready…”

That was Frank Rizzo in May 1991 running again for mayor. But it was just two months later, on July 16th, that Rizzo collapsed and died at his campaign headquarters.

Today brings ceremonies marking the 20th anniversary at the Rizzo statue in front of the Municipal Services Building, organized by longtime friend Hank Cisco.

“A lot of friends will gather to pay tribute to a man who loved Philadelphia, truly as they say, one of Philadelphia’s finest,” said Cisco.

Also taking place — a memorial motorcycle ride from the Rizzo grave site in Cheltenham to the statue.

R.I.P. BAMBINO…YOUR WAY HAS BEEN VINDICATED. THE CITY IS A WAR-ZONE AND THE MORONS WHO RUN IT COULDN’T SPELL “SPACCO IL CAPO” LET ALONE UNDERSTAND HOW EFFECTIVE AND NECESSARY SUCH A POLICY CAN BE.

I agree with Billy boy……… All he was good for was beating heads. Remember the photo of him in a tux, carrying a night stick? What an ASS!

  3. Billy boy says:

Rizzo was nothing more than a street thug in a blue uniform. The City should be embarassed that he ever was it’s mayor.

  4. JOSEPH says:

I WANT HBO TO DO A TV SERIES OF THE CAREER AND LIFE OF FRANK RIZZO. SELF TITLED RIZZO OF COURSE. THOSE WERE THE DAYS IT MUST HAVE GEEN A FUN TIME TO WORK IN THE MEDIA THEN.

Rizzo could never compare to Wilson Goode
All these white people blogging about the good ol’ days
Rizzo planted the seeds that flower your Philly today
    Gone and better forgotten

The city was never a safer place to live than under Frank Rizzo’s leadership. Sadly all we have right now are a bunch of corrupt politicians only interested in how much they can personally make from their positions of power.

  7. John says:

Now retired and enjoying Florida, but will always be proud of my days as a “Rizzo Raider” serving the people of the ONCE great city of Philadelphia

  8. Joseph A. Yannuzzi Jr. says:

Frank Rizzo was a great man…a man’s man, and the city was never safer when he was mayor. Now today, we have a bunch of losers running the city, crime is rampant, and you take your life in your hands walking around center city at night.

Rest in peace Frank, you were the best and we miss you dearly.

  9. Hater says:

Can they clone this great man? Philly desperately needs him back.

  10. John Eric Schneider says:

Would love to participate in today’s ride with the police motorcycle team but cannot. However, my wife and I will pray for the Rizzo family on this somber day particularly Mrs. (Carmella) Rizzo now in her mid 90’s and Joanna, Franny and the rest of the Rizzo family. Mayor Frank Rizzo was right when he said, “They’ll never forget me when I leave. And there will never be another one like me.”
