Somber Ceremony To Honor Former Philadelphia Mayor Frank Rizzo

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Saturday marks the 20th anniversary of the death of former Philadelphia Mayor Frank Rizzo, and his life will be honored with a ceremony at 12:30 p.m. in Center City.

"We the citizens of Philadelphia picked ourselves up, dusted ourselves off… and now stand ready…"

That was Frank Rizzo in May 1991 running again for mayor. But it was just two months later, on July 16th, that Rizzo collapsed and died at his campaign headquarters.

Today brings ceremonies marking the 20th anniversary at the Rizzo statue in front of the Municipal Services Building, organized by longtime friend Hank Cisco.

"A lot of friends will gather to pay tribute to a man who loved Philadelphia, truly as they say, one of Philadelphia's finest," said Cisco.

Also taking place -- a memorial motorcycle ride from the Rizzo grave site in Cheltenham to the statue.
