Mayor Nutter Helps Inaugurate New Season For Philadelphia's Public Pools

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The first of the Philadelphia's public swimming pools opened this morning, with Mayor Michael Nutter joining in for a dip.

The swimming pool at the Mander Recreation Center, at 33rd and Diamond Streets, was the first of the city pools to open this week.  Half of the pools will be opened this weekend, with all 70 open by July 4th weekend.

First Niagara Bank donated $100,000 this year and led a campaign to raise the rest of the $600,000 needed to operate the pools.

"For us it's important because, quite frankly, some of these kids may be our employees one day," said First Niagara regional president Bob Kane.

"We're living in a time where sometimes this is the only vacation that people will get, right in their communities," said city recreation commissioner Susan Slawson.  "So it's extremely important that the city pools are open.  And it's free!"

Monica was very happy:

"On a hot day, in a heat wave, we can go to the pool and get wet."
