Brotherly Love: Running In Memory Of Sandy

TRAPPE, Pa. (CBS) -- When a popular hair stylist died of cancer last year, her family and friends decided to raise money for her favorite cause: helping kids with cancer.

Inside the Hair Cuttery in Trappe, the salon is abuzz with activity, but there's one person missing, Sandy Sellers Copley, who used to work here.

"She had such a great work ethic. She was great with her clients, wonderful with the children," said friend Sandra Trinkley.

"She loved running," said Charlotte Sellers, Sandy's mom, "and she was training for a marathon when her leg swelled up. Then we found out she had cancer."

Last March, doctors amputated Sandy's leg, but not even that could save her. She died last June at the age of 43. She left behind two children.

In her memory, stylists at the Hair Cuttery are helping sponsor the first Sandy Sellers Copley 5K. It will be held along the Perkiomen Trail starting in Schwenksville.

"I think it just helps to keep us all going, to have things to busy ourselves with it and help plan it," said Trinkley.

The money raised will go to Sandy's favorite charity, St Jude Children's Research Hospital, where she donated $25 a month.

"She mailed that check faithfully to them, never thinking she would have cancer," said Sellers.

The race will happen Saturday, June 25, a year to the day Sandy died.

"I like to think she's in heaven now with both her legs, running that marathon she wanted to run, in golden sneakers," said Sellers.

The day after, Sunday, June 26, The Hair Cuttery in Trappe will sponsor a cut-a-thon, ten dollar haircuts from 6 to 9 p.m., with the money going to St Jude.

Donna Wentzel of the Hair Cuttery is a survivor herself. "I think it's a great cause. I've been through it. Sandy's been through. No kid should have to go through it," said Wentzel.

They hope the money they raise in Sandy's name saves a child from going through it.

The Sandy Sellers Copley Memorial 5K Run will be held Saturday, June 25, 2011 at 9:00 a.m. along the Perkiomen Trail. The race begins and ends at Spring Mountain Resort, 757 Spring Mount Road in Schwenksville, PA.

Participants can register up to and including the day of the race. For any questions, contact Charlotte Sellers at 215-491-9340 or email at csrncharlotte@comcast.net.

The Sandy Sellers Copley Cut-A-Thon will be held Sunday, June 26, 2011 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Hair Cuttery, 136 Main Street in Trappe, PA.
