1,500 Philadelphia Teacher Layoffs Remain On Hold
PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- The state Supreme Court is wading into the battle between the Philadelphia school district and its teachers union over what could be the biggest job losses in a generation.
The cash-strapped district issued more than 1,500 pink slips to teachers last week. The layoffs are on hold while the justices review the case.
Monday's court order came the same day that hundreds of teachers rallied against planned program cuts and job losses. It would be the largest teacher layoff in 30 years.
On Tuesday, Mayor Michael Nutter visited several schools that would be affected by the cutbacks. He is pushing City Council to pass new or increased taxes to help the fund the schools.
Even as he toured the buildings, hundreds of tax opponents protested at City Hall.
Pennsylvania's biggest district is facing a record $629 million deficit.
