Guide To Philadelphia's Farmers' Markets

The local food craze has swept the nation, and with so many farmers' markets within the city and scattered throughout the suburbs, Philadelphians can take their pick of delicious, local produce, dairy products and baked goods…even artisinal chocolate and natural beauty products!

But before you shop, there are a few things to consider. While some markets accept debit and credit cards, others are cash-only; those that are cash-only are designated below when able to be identified. And while most of the farmers that participate in these markets also accept Farmers' Market Nutrition Program paper vouchers (which are issued to seniors or WIC recipients), SNAP/food stamps and (for Food Trust markets) Philly Food Bucks, some do not. You should check with each individual farmer before you buy.

Also, some of the market descriptions include a general list of goods and products sold at that location. Specific markets might not offer all of the products listed every time they are open, and some might occasionally have a larger variety of goods.

Finally, it's necessary to decode a few product terms. IPM, which is listed with some products (e.g. "IPM veggies"), stands for "Integrated Pest Management," which means that these items are grown with a sustainable approach to pest management so as to minimize health risks and environmental impact. "Pastured" animals are animals that have been raised on pasture and eat their natural diet (as opposed to processed feed). Farmers who raise pastured livestock usually don't give them antibiotics or inject them with hormones, producing healthier, tastier food.

Now that you're primed and ready to go, enjoy our comprehensive list of Philadelphia-area farmers' markets, which will tell you where to shop and when to go. Happy—and healthy—eating! –Chelsea Karnash
