Another Scorcher Today

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - More records could be set today as temperatures climb back into the high 90s. Schools in Philadelphia will once again close at 1:30 p.m. because of the heat.

The mercury hit a record-setting 97 Wednesday, causing all kinds of problems for commuters during the evening rush.

The heat caused a section of the Schuylkill Expressway to buckle Wednesday afternoon. A temporary patch has Sam Clover giving the all clear this morning, but the evening rush from King of Prussia into the city took over an hour.

But it was potentially worse for some stranded SEPTA regional rail riders. A train headed to West Trenton got stuck without power -- and without air conditioning. Around the same time, riders on a Chestnut Hill West train also got stuck, according to SEPTA spokeswoman Geri Williams.

"Fortunately, there was power on this particular train and there was air conditioning, but the inconvenience of having to wait to get to where you were trying to go for two and a half hours."

Williams says an Amtrak power problem, likely heat related, caused the major delays.

And once again, because of the heat, several schools will be dismissing early on Thursday.
