Philadelphia Schools Closing Early Because Of Heat

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - It's not even summer yet, and we're already facing our second heat wave of the year. It's causing some headaches for some school districts.

Over a dozen schools in the area will be closing early Wednesday, which is good news for kids, but not so much for parents.

In Philadelphia, Public and Archdiocesan schools are dismissing at 1:30 p.m.

"It's going to affect work, so I have to call out of work and go get the kids and be there with them," one parent said.

And then the question is what to do with the kids in this heat? It's so early in the year, pools aren't open yet. In the city, pools won't open until June 22nd.

So without those pools, some ideas to cool off include a trip to an air-conditioned mall, library, museum or movie theater.

The New Jersey office of Emergency Management and the city of Philadelphia are issuing excessive heat warnings for Wednesday and Thursday. Here in the city, that triggers outreach programs and the Philadelphia Corporation for Aging heat line.
