Camden Police Officer In Critical Condition After Being Stabbed In The Chest

CAMDEN, N.J. (CBS) - A Camden City police officer is in critical condition after sustaining stab wounds to the chest late Saturday night while on duty.

Authorities say at about 10:15 p.m., the officer and his partner were working a traffic detail on Broadway and Mickle Boulevard when they noticed a fight involving two men near the Susquehanna Bank Center.

Both officers rushed to break up the fight, but one of the officers was allegedly stabbed by the suspect who police have identified as 28-year-old Ronald Belcher.

The other officer quickly subdued Belcher, arrested and charged him with attempted murder. The second man in the fight, 33-year-old Lamont Cloud was also taken into custody and charged with resisting arrest.

Police have not identified the injured officer at this time, but they say he is a 14-year veteran of the force.

He is listed in critical condition at Cooper University Hospital.
