Eating Slower Prevents Health Problems

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Have you ever noticed the rate of speed at which your dog and even some cats as well, can gulp down their food on a daily basis? Well, it may seem a bit comical, but in reality, it can be extremely dangerous for their health. There are a number of illnesses that can result from that type of rapid ingestion.

First and most dangerous is bloat or GDV, wherein the stomach actually distends with gas and actually turns over as it is cut off from blood supply. This can occur primarily in large chested dogs but has been seen in smaller breeds as well and can be fatal in a short time. The speed at which they eat plays an enormous factor.

Other problems from eating too quickly include gastritis, vomiting and severe stomach upset for both dogs and cats.

Solutions would be to invest in a "slow-down" bowl, made for both dogs and cats, where compartments separate the food to make chewing slower and more methodical. (Of course, always provide plenty of fresh water.) Or instead of a larger meal, break it up by feeding smaller portions several times a day. Maybe add just a little water to dry food to slow down chewing.

Another idea is to buy toys that dispense small amount of food as they play with it.
