Driver Comes Under Fire After Striking Two Children In Wilmington

WILMINGTON, Del. (CBS) -- It's a case of misguided 'street justice' gone wild.

Police in Wilmington are searching for a gunman who opened fire on a driver who accidentally struck two 8-year-old boys with his car.

According to police, a 60-year-old driver struck the two boys who were playing on a motorized scooter in the 600 block of West 7th Street in Wilmington just after 5 p.m. Wednesday.

The driver, who stopped his car, was swarmed by a crowd of people who allegedly attempted to pull him from the car. Police say, the man got back into his car and fled the scene, thats when, police say, a neighbor pulled a gun and six times.

Todd Quinones reports...

The driver's vehicle was struck once, but he was not injured. He alerted police of the incident once he was able to drive to safety.

Both boys were treated and released from a nearby hospital.

The driver was interviewed by police and will likely not face charges.

This investigation is ongoing.
