Haverford Cricket Heading To Cooperstown

HAVERFORD, Pa. (CBS) - Cricket is one of the most popular sports in the world, but here in the US it hasn't caught a lot of main stream attention.  But the folks at Haverford College, home to the only varsity cricket program in the country, are hoping to change that.

On April 17th, the Haverford cricket team will take a very special trip to Cooperstown, New York.

Head Coach Kamran Khan explained, "Baseball Hall of Fame learned about Haverford Cricket and they contacted us.  They want us to come and demonstrate to the American public there what cricket is, because it is one of the most popular sports in the world, and they are very keen in developing some aspects of cricket in the Hall of Fame."

Cricket and baseball have some loose similarities in the way they are played.

Khan said they will hold three sessions for the public, explaining and demonstrating the sport.  They will also be some question and answer periods.

The coach is excited to spread the word about the sport and school he loves.

"I think it is very exciting," Khan said.  "Whatever I do at Haverford College as head coach, my main goal is to promote the name of the college."

Khan said cricket is a staple at Haverford, "It has been played here since 1844 and actually in the late 1800's, early 1900's, Haverford College team use to go to England and do very well."

Since Haverford is the only team playing at a varsity level in the US, they fill their schedule playing various club teams and in tournaments and festivals.
