Temple Alum To Walk 140 Miles To Raise Money For Cancer Research

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - A Temple alum is walking over 140 miles this week as part of a national effort to raise money to fight cancer.

Eric Stephenson, 23, a 2010 alumnus, recently received a phone call from his good college friend, Sarah, who urged him to get involved in the Relay For Life cancer awareness event at Temple on Friday night to celebrate her six months of being cancer free.

Stephenson decided to take the idea a step further, to walk 141 miles from Connecticut to Temple -- not only for Sarah but also for a fraternity brother, Ramon, who died of cancer in August 2010.

"This was just something that I thought will be a good idea to, not only honor him who was beat by cancer, but also honor a friend who has beat cancer herself," Stephenson said.

He also said the long journey back to Philadelphia will give him time to reflect.

"It also gives me an opportunity to understand how I feel about the whole situation and essentially make meaning of life and death, which can be a pretty daunting task, but I will have plenty of time to think about it on my walk," Stephenson said.

Eric leaves Tuesday, travelling 12 to 14 hours a day. If you want to help Eric raise funds, click here.
