Univ. of Pennsylvania Med Students Get Their Residency 'Matches'

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - It was "Match Day" today for 147 doctors graduating from the University of Pennsylvania's medical school.  This was the day they learned where they will be spending their residencies.

Renee Betancourt of Philadelphia was among the 75 women and 72 men nervously awaiting the envelopes containing their residency offers.

Betancourt slowly returned to her seat after her name was called, clutching the envelope.  She sat down beside her husband of nearly four years, Sean Wegman.

"Maybe we should just take a second," she said.

"Open it," he urged.

"All right, all right. Let's open it. It's UCASF! Yay!"

Betancourt got her top pick: a residency in family medicine at the University of California at San Francisco.

"I'm really, really happy," she said a short time later.  "This is what I wanted, and I just feel really lucky and happy. I just can't believe it."

Betancourt says she'll be working in pediatrics, women's health care, and adult health practice during the residency.

Eventually, Betancourt says, she'd like to return to the Philadelphia area to practice medicine and eventually teach in a medical school -- perhaps even Penn.
