Communication Is Essential For Training

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Communication with your dog is an essential element before beginning any type of training or introducing any new behavior. It's important to know the signs and signals that your dog is sending you.

Look for these signs in the form of body language and vocal cues. For example, if your dog pulls away, looks completely away, bares his/her teeth, displays ears pulled all the way back or all the way forward, or holds his/her tail extremely low, straight out or down between the legs, your dog may be fearful, stressed or frightened.

This anxiety can be heard as well as seen, when your dog whines, barks excessively, growls, etc. Attempting to introduce a new behavior in this state can lead to further anxiety and possible aggression, even if it may seem out of character for your dog. Never attempt to train a dog who is in a stressful or anxious state. This will only escalate this negative emotion and create even greater stress

If your dog is overexcited, walk your dog first to deplete the excess energy before beginning the training session. Make sure your dog is calm and in a relaxed state before teaching him/her a new behavior.

Your dog should be calm, focused and attentive. This will always produce the best results. Always treat and reward and provide plenty of affection.
