Suspects Sought After Young Mother Killed Outside Philadelphia Traffic Court

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Police announced on Tuesday, they have identified all the individuals involved in the beating death of a pregnant woman outside Philadelphia traffic court.

The incident happened at 8th and Spring Garden Streets at about 2 p.m. on Monday.

According to investigators, 21-year-old Tovoyia Owens went to traffic court with her boyfriend and when the couple walked out of the building, the two were confronted by two other men. Eyewitnesses told police, the two men began arguing then punching and kicking Owens to the ground. Owens was rushed to the hospital where she later died.

Police say they believe the two attackers were Owens’ ex-boyfriend and his brother.

“She’s my sister, my best friend, we all knew her. There is no ex-boyfriend. We don’t know these guys, we don’t know of them, we don’t know what they wanted, who they were looking for,” Dennise Thompson said.

Police maintain their information is based on the one suspect arrested at the scene. Police say he has been cooperating and the investigation into what sparked the fight is continuing.

“It’s a tremendous loss. Toya, she was wonderful,” Lisa Brown, the victim’s Godmother said.

Eyewitness News learned from friends, Owens was four months pregnant and was working and studying to become a lawyer. Friends say Owens was a student at Cheyney University and a mother to a 3-year-old girl.

Thompson later explained she is Owens’ best friend but the two shared a close bond and considered each other to be like sisters. Thompson added, “My 3-year-old niece is walking around, asking for her mom and can’t nobody explain to her what’s going on.”

As for the investigation, police say they are in the process of obtaining an arrest warrant to bring the second and final suspect into custody. Police say they will be withholding the suspects’ names until charges are officially filed in this case.

Whom ever is responsible for this inhuman act of violence needs to be put in jail and RAPED REPEATEDLY and TORTURED to the point that they can’t take it and just kill themselves so that they’ll GO STRAIGHT TO HELL……

  5. kate says:

    Ms. Bey
you hit it on the nail. every last person female or male should have jumped in on this. to allow someone to be beaten to death, and then to find out she was pregnant – how do you sleep at night knowing you could have helped?? oh yes i know you have guts saying anything about jumping in — well i would have and probably the first person who would have the rest of the people would have followed. as far as the animals who did this- put them to death forget about appeals, etc pieces of trash.
mayor nutter had better stop and think how now it is happening in broad daylight outside a court? what is happening to this city, what a laughing stock of the country we must be.
RIP and God please welcome this unborn child into your kingdom

  6. The Mechanic says:

How is someone beaten to death outside traffic court? Were there no cops at traffic court? The place should have been crawling with cops. Maybe The City of Brotherly Love doesn’t need law enforcement officers??

  7. Ms. Bey says:

I would like to leave a message to every soul (witnesses) that was present during this awful, dispicable act. Every last one of you ABSOLUTELY NEED TO BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELVES. All of you were probably thinking, ” that’s none of my concern”, well look where not having any concern or a heart got all of you. EVERY LAST ONE OF YOU PEOPLE WITNESSED A MURDER and that memory is going to stick for the rest of all your miserable lives. You people are disgusting, just realize and know that!!!!!

    1. Jules says:

I sooooo AGREE with you Ms. Bey. Hope that hunts them all their lives. But most likely they are as much of an animal as these people are that beat her like that.

  9. Linda D Bryant says:

My heart goes out to this young ladies family.

I know that at the time of day it was, there were many people mulling in and around the traffic court area.

So sad that NO ONE came to this woman’s aid.

There are too many COLD, CRUEL, UN-CIVILIZED folks in the world today!

I hope that they catch each and everyone of the PUNKS who did this and that they are charged with TWO COUNTS OF MURDER. For the victim and her unborn child!!!!!

    1. chris says:

I have to agree with Linda the charge should be two counts of murder. What is our world coming to. It seems we are rising boys who turn into men that really do not see a problem with hitting a women beating or them to death but yet they call themselves men. I call them animals!!!! My prayers go out to Ms. Owen’s family.

  10. PERPLEXED says:

EVEN IF SHE DID ISSUE A TICKET TO SOMEONE, IT DOES NOT JUSTIFY MURDER.. … BASED ON THAT LOGIC I GUESS ANYBODY WHO HAS SOMEONE MAD AT THEM FOR DOING THEIR JOB, THEN THEY SHOULD BE SHOT?

  11. Lisa says:

I hope and pray that these animals with no heart get the death penalty. How could these punks beat this young girl to death. Sad, sad day. Bless her soul and bless her family.

    1. Jacque says:

Read up on this again cause u have the story all wrong even though it doesn’t matter!!! u still need to get ur story straight before making a comment!!!

  12. starr reynolds says:

i was thinking the same thing reading their comments. she was a young mother not a parking authority official. show respect to the young woman who passed with some ruthless violence.

  13. NOT TO BE TOO UPSET? says:

IT APPEARS THE LADIES WERE DECIDING WHO WAS TO PAY FOR THE PARKING TICKET. .. AND IT GOT A LITTLE OUT OF HAND, ….. INTO FACE, IT SEEMS

THIS IS SO SAD… A LOSS OF LIFE OF A PARKING TICKET. STILL IM NOT SURPRISED THAT HARM HAS NOT COME YET, TO THE GOOD FOLKS WHO ISSUE
TICKETS DAILY.. THIS IS PHILA , AFTER ALL.
IM STILL LOOKING FOR THE PIT BULL IN THIS STORY.
