Police Dog Wounded in Salem, NJ Recovering At Penn Vet Clinic

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - A police dog wounded in the line of duty this week during an 11-hour standoff in Salem, NJ (see previous story) is recovering at the University of Pennsylvania's veterinary hospital, and could return to work at some point.

His handler, who was also wounded, spoke this morning with KYW Newsradio.

Three-and-a-half year old Jordan still has the bullet lodged inside him, but remarkably was actually able to play with patrolman William Robinson for a time at Penn Vet.

Robinson was grazed by a bullet and is already back on duty. But his concerns are with his four-legged partner right now.

"I was very excited to see the way he was," Robinson told KYW Newsradio. "You couldn't even tell anything was wrong with him besides being wrapped up."
Robinson hopes to bring him home as early as next week.

The suspect accused of holding police at bay on Wednesday, 24-year-old Lavar Rodgers, is facing several counts of attempted murder and is being held in lieu of $1 million bail.

Donations are being taken through the Salem County K-9 Association, in Pennsville, to help pay the veterinary bill.

Donations can be sent to the Salem County K-9 Association, 143 Lincoln Drive, Pennsville NJ 08070, or directly to officials maintaining the holding account at The Bank, 125 Route 45, Salem, NJ 08079.
