PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Philadelphia public and archdiocesan schools will be closed Friday, January 28th because many Philadelphia streets remain impassable. Still, the city is giving itself high marks for fighting the snow.
“We want to thank all of our public employees and the public as well for a spectacular job,” said Mayor Nutter
Nutter says, of some 2,500 miles of streets in the city, all but 100 miles have been plowed or treated. The fact that many streets remain snow-covered and dangerous to drive on, he says, is because of a phenomenon called hard-pack, where partly thawed snow refreezes and then sticks to asphalt.

Mayor Nutter says residents have been understanding and he’s asking that they continue to co-operate by shoveling walks and checking in on elderly relatives or neighbors.
