How To Feel More Secure About Outdoor Decorations

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - When the winds started whipping up recently, they took a lot of decorations with them, sending Santa hats flying and boughs of holly blowing all over. But it's simple to keep evergreens and other decorations where you want them. When I got frustrated fetching greens and ribbons and bows that blew out of my displays, I finally got smart and fixed them in place with sod pins.

Like giant hairpins that hold grass strips down when you lay a new lawn, sod pins have pointed ends that are easy to shove into soil even when it's frozen. In seconds, just a couple of sod pins nailed the holly boughs and greens into my planters and they withstood the Boxing Day blizzard just fine. It's a good idea for any outdoor displays you want to stay put on your property – from greenery to lights to illuminated plastic figures. Just get a pack of sod pins next time you're at the garden center, and you'll be able to relax and worry less when the winter winds blow.
