One Person Killed In Early Morning Fire In West Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (CBS/AP) - Philadelphia fire officials say one person died in a fast-moving row house fire in the 600 block of south 57th Street, early Saturday morning.

Fire fighters were called to the scene in the Cobbs Creek section of southwest Philadelphia at approximately 2:30 a.m. The fire went to two alarms and spread to five neighboring houses before being brought under control just before 3:30 a.m.

Inside the home where the fire started, firefighters found the victim who has not been identified.

The cause is under investigation.

The southeastern Pennsylvania chapter of the American Red Cross says it is providing financial assistance to eight people to buy food, clothing, winter coats, shoes and other necessities following the blaze. Spokesman Dave Schrader says the organization is also helping 23 people following five other fires in the city since 8 a.m. Friday.
