Art For Rent

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - These days you can rent all kinds of things like designer dresses and jewelry.

Now a different kind of rental service allows you to add a touch of luxury to your home. And it's something that you might think you could never afford.

Original artwork!

CBS 3 anchor Susan Barnett has the story.

Art lover Todd Saunders is happy with his latest piece of artwork.

"I'm kind of outgrowing college posters. I appreciate some scenic photographs, but I travel a lot for work and I don't have much time to go to art galleries," said Saunders.

Just like ordering from rental companies like Netflix, the monthly movie rental company, Saunders is able to create a list of artwork he wants to have shipped to his house.

He's using a new company called Turning Art.

Starting at about $10 a month, clients can get a new print every three months.

"We allow customers to explore and rotate artwork in their homes with our kind of fine art subscription plans," explains Jason Gracilieri of Turning Art.

These days, renting instead of buying seems to be the trend.

There's Rent The Runway for party dresses and matching purses, all on loan.

There are even fancy jewelry rentals that would otherwise be outside many people's budgets.

"I would rent for trendy items. I would buy for the things that are longer term that really do have a residual value," says financial advisor Dana Levit.

Turning Art allows you to actually build equity as you rent the artwork, making it easier to buy the real painting later on if you decide you really like it.

"The idea is that you kind of get two products at the same time," says Gracilieri. "One is this great service that allows you to explore artwork in your home, but it's also kind of an original art savings plan."

So you can have it today and tomorrow.

Turning Art has been available online since August and has about 300 original paintings in its collection.
