Chilean Officials, Noting Pa. Help In Miners' Rescue, Visit Harrisburg Tree Lighting

HARRISBURG, Pa. (CBS) -- With Pennsylvania companies having played a key role in the Chilean miners' rescue that riveted the world, Chilean officials were the honored guests on Wednesday as the state capitol Christmas tree was officially lit.

Governor Rendell declared it the world's "feel-good" story in a generally bleak 2010,  and said it was appropriate to commemorate the Chilean mine rescue at Wednesday's capitol tree lighting ceremony.

"Because three Pennsylvania companies played an important part in effectuating -– in helping to effectuate -– the rescue of those trapped miners," the governor said.

Ambassador Arturo Fermandois (right) was one of two Chilean dignitaries who took part in the ceremony.

"Help like this is not possible overnight," Fermandois said at the ceremony.  "We had ties before. We have a strong friendship between Chile and the state of Pennsylvania."

Also present was Chile's minister of defense, Jaime Ravinet, who served as mayor of Santiago when Governor Rendell traveled there on a trade mission as mayor of Philadelphia.

Reported by KYW Harrisburg Bureau chief Tony Romeo.
