New E-ZPass-Only Slip Ramp Is Open In Bucks Co.

BENSALEM (CBS) – A new E-ZPass-only slip ramp is now open on the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Bucks County and it’s designed to alleviate congestion at the toll road’s second busiest interchange.

About 65,000 vehicles pass through the Bensalem interchange every day and the expansion at Parx Casino is only expected to push that number higher. To alleviate some of that congestion, drivers heading eastbound on the turnpike can now exit at the E-ZPass-only interchange which will dump them right onto Street Road according to turnpike spokesman Carl DeFebo:

“We’re expecting to relieve some of the pressure that the Bensalem exit sees every day by about 7,000 to 8,000 vehicles a day.”

Drivers can also get on at the new interchange from Street Road if they are heading east on the turnpike. The new ramps are only for cars and not trucks. This is the second E-ZPass-only interchange with the other one being at Virginia Drive. Construction is scheduled to begin next year on a third one at Route 29 in Chester County.

WARNING!!!! The charge for getting off at this new ramp is $1.00 MORE than getting off at the old Bensalem exit.

The new EZ-Pass only ramp (Exit 352 – Street Road) is only 1/2 mile further than Exit 351 – Bensalem yet the PA Turnpike Comission charges you that same amount as if you were getting off 7 miles further East at Exit 358 – Delaware Valley (Rte 13 Levittown).

So, for example, if you get on at 343 Willow Grove and get off at 351 Bensalem (8 miles) the charge is $1.00 but if you get on at 343 Willow Grove and get off at 352 Street Road (8.5 miles) the charge is $2.00! And because this is an EZ-Pass only exit, you don’t know about the extra charge unless you check your statement.

Why does it cost $1.00 to go 8 miles from Willow Grove to Bensalem but $2.00 to go an extra 1/2 mile to Street Road? I’ll tell you what the PA Turnpike told me: To pay for the ramp construction.

I say, refuse to use the ramp until the cost is more reasonable! If nobody uses it, they won’t rob you to pay for this ramp.
