Gamble And Huff To Be Honored With Street Renaming

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A block of south Broad Street was to be named after legendary music producers Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff, Wednesday.  So how does a street get renamed?

Before 1990, it was frankly a real pain to get a street name changed in Philadelphia, as least for the people who lived on the street.

It involved the Postal Service, the Board of Revision of Taxes and other agencies.  Then the residents had spend time and money notifying everyone of their address change.

But now, people can go to City Council with a request for an AKA or "Also Known As" street name change for someone who has helped significantly change Philadelphia for the better.

Assistant Chief Engineer Charles Denny said, "You present them the facts are concerning the individuals and then City Council passes a resolution."

And then, he added, the Streets Department takes over to, "Make sure no one is named on that street, for one thing.   And then just preparing signs."

South Broad Street between Spruce and Pine will be named AKA Gamble/Huff Walk.
