Fire Company Member Killed In Chester County Home Explosion

KENNETT SQUARE, Pa. (CBS) -- Chester County Police and fire officials say a man has died as a result of an accidental catastrophic chemical explosion.

State police say James McGovern, 22-years-old, was killed Saturday in the accidental chemical blast in front of his Kennett Township home. Police were called at about 4:30 p.m. Saturday to Hillendale Road, which is in a wooded area surrounded by farmland.

McGovern, who launched small rockets as a hobby, was experimenting with homemade rocket fuel in his front yard when the blast occurred, police say.

Members of the hazardous materials investigation team determined that McGovern was only testing a fuel combination when the explosion occurred and not launching a rocket.
