Fairytale Pumpkins - As Easy As Pie

Philadelphia (CBS) -- Once upon a time I saw pumpkins I'd never seen before – fanciful shapes like out of a storybook. Well, it was just the other day at my neighborhood grocery store, and they're called 'Fairytale Pumpkins.' At least that's the name of one of the cultivars of these new pumpkins.

They sort of look like a combination of gourds, pumpkins and squash – flatter shapes than traditional jack-o-lanterns, in colors from orange to ghostly white, and skin from smooth to bumpy like brains. And you can eat these pumpkins like squash, in savory side dishes and soups, or bake them into something sweet for dessert.

Fairytale pumpkins make Halloween decorating easy because they're simple to stack on your front steps, or on a party table to create a centerpiece. A fairytale pumpkin does look like it could indeed become a golden carriage - it's possible; but even without a magic wand, once Halloween has passed, it's easy enough to turn them into a pie.
