Seven Coatesville, Pa. firefighters were injured early Friday morning battling a multi-alarm apartment building fire.

KYW’s Al Novack reports that Chester County 911 received a call reporting a fast spreading fire at 12:49am at the Millview Apartments along the 1800 block of Saginaw Drive in the City of Coatesville.

When the first fire crews arrived, they found the 28-unit apartment building engulfed in flames and fire was spreading rapidly. Officers immediately struck additional alarms requesting more manpower and equipment. Those alarms brought as many as 100-volunteer firefighters to the scene from surrounding communities plus the American Red Cross.

All residents were safely evacuated, but at least seven firefighters reported varying degrees of injuries. All seven were transported to local hospitals with injuries ranging from smoke inhalation and burns, to broken legs.

There is no word yet on a cause. The red cross is helping provide shelter for residents displaced from at least 15-apartment units according to spokesman Dave Shrader.
