Of all of the things I remember about the Phillies and the 80’s, Von Hayes is one of the most clear. My aunt Joanne’s obsession with Hayes is what sticks out the most. Well, that and the five for one trade that brought him here.
Von Hayes is now the manager of the Camden Riversharks, the Atlantic League team that plays across the river. Like Hayes told me, it’s not glamorous, but it’s all about baseball.
I was pretty stoked to get the opportunity to speak to Von Hayes, especially after the Riversharks immortalized him with his own bobblehead. We talked today about the life of an Atlantic League manager, his bi-polar relationship with Philly fans, and Ryan Howard’s confrontation with umpire Scott Barry.
