Upper Dublin Communications Tower to be Removed

A 195-foot communications tower along Twining Road that dozens of Upper Dublin residents called an "eyesore" and a safety threat is coming down.

KYW's Brad Segall reports that nearby residents mounted a strong campaign opposing the Norfolk Southern Railroad tower, putting out lawn signs and urging their elected leaders to tear down the tower.

Norfolk Southern said the tower was for railroad communications but township officials suspected it was constructed to lease out to cell phone carriers.

Township commissioner Chet Derr calls the removal of the tower great news:

"When Norfolk came in and reevaluated everything, like I said, they deemed it was not compatible for their needs and it's coming down."

That should happen in the next two weeks.  The concrete pad will remain on the site for possible future use.

The township had cited the company for zoning violations, but those will be rescinded after the tower is removed.
