Rod Thorn To Be Named President Of Sixers

PHILADELPHIA (WIP) - The Sixers will hold an 11am press conference today to announce that Rod Thorn will be team president, according to Howard Eskin on Twitter. Ed Stefanski will remain the team's GM.

Thorn resigned from the New Jersey Nets front office this off-season, feeling his time with the team had run its course. He was named NBA Executive Of The Year in 2002 after the Nets reached the Finals for the first time in team history.

Thorn served as GM of the Bulls in the late 70′s and early 80′s, where he played a part in drafting Michael Jordan. He was also Vice President of the NBA, where he served under David Stern.

Thorn is a good basketball mind to have around. It's hard to know the dynamic that will now exist in the front office, but any personnel transaction Stefanski makes will have to go through Thorn.

My favorite Rod Thorn memory comes from his time in the NBA front office. His job during the NBA Draft would be to announce the second round picks, where he would inexplicably be booed by the crowd. It always made me laugh.
