One Philadelphia School is Already Back in Session

The school year has begun in Philadelphia -- at one charter school, at least.

KYW's Mike DeNardo reports that the First Philadelphia Charter School for Literacy is living up to its name.  Today is the first day of the new school year for kids in this K-8 school in Bridesburg.

Principal Kristine Magargee says the 700 kids here know the drill:

"They don't mind being back at the beginning of August.  And so that makes it easy.  Because they're very excited to be back.  They can't wait to figure out who their teacher is, line up in the line, and say good morning as they come in."

Linda Brinkley's daughter Leayana is starting 7th grade:

"She absolutely loves it.  She loves it.  And she couldn't wait to be back today."

Magargee says the August-to-June calendar is working and her school has made "AYP" -- adequate yearly progress -- for the last three years.

Philadelphia public schools return to class September 7th.
