Charges Filed Against S. Phila. Chihuahua Hoarder

Charges were filed against a South Philadelphia homeowner who was hoarding more than 80 Chihuahuas and other mixed dogs.

KYW's John McDevitt reports that most of the 85 animals were adopted into new homes.

On July 14th, humane law enforcement officers removed 85 animals from inside a home in the 700 block of Earp Street -- 83 dogs and two cats (see related story).

Officer George Bengal is the director of law enforcement for the PSPCA:

"We got a little bit of a break in this case. The lady was willing to sign all the animals over which allowed us to release the dogs to rescues for adoption."

(McDevitt:)  "That's not always the case right?"

"No it's not. Normally, if the offender does not sign over the dogs and release them over to the SPCA the animals have to be held until the case is completed."

The former owner of the animals faces 134 citations totaling more than $100,000 and possibly up to 90 days in jail or both.
