Pennsylvania has some of the richest coal reserves in the country and their future use may depend on the controversial carbon cap and trade plan.
KYW’s John Ostapkovich reports Dan Goldman is CFO of GreatPoint Energy which boasts a clean coal technology:
“We turn it into pipeline quality natural gas, but we don’t let anything go up the smokestack so there’s no mercury, no nitrogen, no sulphur, no particulates.”
This technology hinges on a cap and price on carbon, which is a high voltage issue in Congress. Some countries aren’t so picky:
“They want us to develop this technology in China. We want to develop this technology in the United States but without the energy policy and without the financial policy that goes along with that, it’s a very challenging future.”
In addition to those opposed to cap and trade, some say “clean coal” is an oxymoron because just mining it makes a mess.
