Free Lunch for the Needy Today at Phila. City Hall

Philadelphia city councilwoman Jannie Blackwell and the Philadelphia Housing Authority teamed up today to offer a free  banquet outside City Hall to those who needed it most.

KYW's Paul Kurtz reports from Dilworth Plaza that the atmosphere was festive, with an army of Housing Authority volunteers serving up hamburgers, hot dogs, and other items to the disadvantaged and the homeless.

(Man:)  "I got a veggie burger with a big bottle of water."

(Woman:)  "I just happened to come down here and I was surprised to see a long line to give food away. I thought I'd take a sample."

"It's a different mix of people, from the homeless to the working class, so it's a great opportunity to meet people who are in need."

Councilwoman Jannie Blackwell has been holding this event for 13 years now:

"We're grateful to have the support and sponsorship of PHA to help us, and we're grateful. It's what we believe in.  We're a city with all kinds of people, all types of people, and we all have to take care of one another. And that's what it's about."
