Clean-up Coming for Independence Hall Water Damage

by KYW's John McDevitt

A multi-million dollar renovation project is scheduled to begin July 12th on the water damaged tower of Independence Hall.

Rain has penetrated wooden siding and rusted iron bars of Independence Hall's tower  over the course of time.  Jane Cowley is a spokeswoman for Independence National Historical Park.  She says the hall will remain open during the 14-month renovation:

"Thankfully, the Friends of Independence have donated money to put this decorative scrim up on the scaffolding so that visitors that come to Philadelphia for the first time from around the world will still be able to see the iconic image of the tower."

Cowley says the $4.3 million renovation project is being funded through the American Recovery and Investment Act and will be closely monitored.  The contract has been awarded to locally based Daniel J. Keating company.
