Gospel Journalist Makes a New Home in Bucks

by KYW's Lauren Lipton

His interest in hip gospel music didn't have a home, so he created one.

"I didn't see any publications that kind of spoke to me.  You know, the Christian gospel love of music.  So I decided to create one."

And when it came time for him to find a new home for himself and his family, Robert Hasan James (right) came to Bensalem, Pa. and started Root magazine and its online counterpart, rootmagazineonline.com.

"We highlight different gospel artists.  One of my biggest issues is called 'The 50 Greatest Gospel Acts of All Time.' "

His idea was to bring gospel music and the culture to everyone.  And what better place to do it than in Philadelphia!

"It's a huge market for gospel.  I think New York is  one of the biggest, but Philly is right behind it as far as gospel, gospel singers.  You have the whole soul, Teddy Pendergrass, the Philly Sound is very huge.  So it's pretty cool."

And why Bensalem?

"My pastor has a church in Brooklyn and in Bensalem, so a lot of people migrated from Brooklyn just to be in this area.  He is a gospel singer as well -- Hezekiah Walker.  He is one of the biggest gospel names.  He has a church in this area.  We decided to move, and we love it."

That's Positively Philadelphia!
