Top Veggie Sandwiches In Philadelphia

There are many wonderful sandwich bars and delicatessens in the Philadelphia area, but when it comes to finding the perfect vegetarian-style sandwich, the choices aren't always so obvious. The deli that serves up the primo corned beef club may not be the best place to get a veggie sandwich, and most cheesesteak places fumble when it comes to going animal-free. But there is good news: Philadelphia does know how to do veggie right -- you just need to know where to go. Read on for some of the top veggie sandwiches found in Philly.
Chickie's Italian Deli
1015 Federal St.
Philadelphia, PA 19147

For more than 20 years, this popular deli has been delivering a taste of South Philly to the region, but two items stand out on the gourmet hoagie menu. Chickie's is the proud originator of the Philadelphia style veggie hoagie, and the eatery's traditional veggie hoagie is loaded with baked eggplant, broccoli rabe, roasted red peppers and sharp provolone. It's also a Best of Philly winner, and the title is well deserved. In addition, there's a Caprese hoagie on the menu, and it's made with the finest fresh mozzarella, basil and tomato.

All The Way Live

This vegan and raw food restaurant, which is located in Germantown's Tulpehocken Station Historic District, was the first raw food eatery in Philadelphia when it opened in 2008. Eight years later, it still serves up alkaline foods made with healthy ingredients, including a create-your-own sandwich menu that takes sandwich making to a whole new level. Patrons can choose from a variety of pita bread fillings, including marinated cabbage, hummus, walnut and herb "nutmeat," corn salad, barbecued mushrooms and more. Also on the sandwich menu: walnut and chickpea veggie burgers.

"Ridiculously creative sandwiches" are on the menu at Jake's, but if the house roasted meats aren't your thing, there's viable veggie options. This eclectic eatery's build-your-own option lets customers customize their sandwich, but several delicious staples also populate this menu. In addition to a delicious cheddar and balsamic sandwich, there's the Crunchy N' Hot, which comes with garlic spread, mild provolone and a crunchy long and hot pepper. Sides include traditional offerings like French fries, but why go traditional when you can have pretzel crusted fried pickles with sriracha spread?

A segment on Food Network's "Diners, Drive Ins and Dives" gave this East Kensington eatery some serious publicity. It also made a star out of the signature Smoked Coconut Club sandwich. Made with grilled lemon garlic tofu, smoked coconut and tomato herb mayo, it's a one-of-a-kind sandwich that you won't find anywhere else in the city. This taproom's southern inspired menu also includes unusual sides such as charred green beans and beer-battered kosher dills.

Let's face it, good veggie cheesesteaks are hard to come by – even in a city that's famous for its cheesesteaks. But one South Philly gastropub has a major claim to fame when it comes to an animal-free version of the Philly staple. Royal Tavern won the coveted first place title for Best Vegan Cheesesteak in the Philadelphia Daily News' 2015 V for Veg contest thanks to its mouthwatering recipe. The vegan delicacy is made with seitan, smothered mushrooms, fried onions and dairy-free mozzarella. The popular eatery also nabbed People's Choice Sandwich and Best Newcomer, so this is one sandwich that's definitely worth a try.
