As a nonprofit organization, Neighborhood Bike Works provides services to both youths and adults, although its primary target group is ages 8 to 18. Founded in 1996, the organization has served more than 4,000 young people by introducing them to the experience and freedom of cycling in the city. Currently, the organization works out of three permanent locations and one volunteer-operated satellite site. It provides youth and adults with basic bicycle maintenance and safe riding skills and also offers an "Earn-a-Bike" program, where youth learn about bike repair and earn the bike on which they worked for a period of eight weeks. In addition to bike repair classes, the organization offers adult repair co-ops, too.
