Top Improv Comedy Nights In Philadelphia

Over the past decade, Philadelphia has become a hotspot for the budding comedian. With many troupes, companies and comedy nights popping up all over the city, you're sure to fine a place to let loose and laugh, especially when it comes to improvisational comedy, which often encourages audience participation. For the best improv comedy nights in Philadelphia, read on.

American Sardine Bar hosts an improv and stand-up comedy event for free every third Thursday in the UpBar (upstairs at ASD). The night features three improv teams each month, including the Sardines, as well as two stand-up comedians. The evening starts at 8:30 p.m. and goes until 10 p.m. American Sardine Bar has an extensive ever-changing draft list as well as 50 cans available. For food, American Sardine Bar serves sardines and sandwiches, including a $3 pork roll slider.

ComedySportz has been bringing laughs to Philadelphia for over 20 years. Similar to the popular TV show "Whose Line Is It Anyway," ComedySportz features two teams playing improv games and competing for points with help from a referee keeping the match moving. This family-friendly improv show is perfect for an audience looking to be involved by shouting suggestions and awarding points– some may even join the teams on stage. The fun evening, for $18 and $15 for students, takes place every Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. and 10 p.m, which is a BYOB. ComedySportz hosts other improv nights throughout the year, including the adult only the Blue Show, and also holds workshops for the budding comedian.

The N Crowd was founded in 2005 and has been performing every Friday night in Philadelphia since then. The evening, which costs $12 in advance and $15 at the door, features the comedy troupe participating in 80 minutes of unscripted comedy with suggestions from the audience, meaning that two shows will only ever have one thing in common - laughs.  The event starts at 8 p.m. at the Actors Center and is a BYOB. The first Friday of each month features a double header with the second show starting at 10 p.m.

Improv & Sketch Comedy At Northern Liberties Rec Center

Northern Liberties Rec Center hosts a free night of improv comedy on the third Friday of every month. Starting at 8 p.m., the show features improv teams from Philadelphia performing both short and long form comedy and improvising a night of comedic laughs. The rec center also provides improv classes for both adults and kids. Visit on the second Friday of the month for Northern Libs sketch comedy night where comedians perform short and scripted sketches.

Philly Improv Theater, respectfully known as PHIT, offers comedy, especially in the form of improvisational, classes, as well as presenting monthly improv shows. Every Wednesday night, PHIT hosts a free improv jam at 10 p.m. where everyone is welcome to try improvising by joining the company's comedians on stage. Before the jam, catch comedians performing classic improv, including the Launch Pad at 7:30 p.m. and two of PHIT's house teams at 9 p.m. PHIT has numerous other comedy shows throughout the week including its popular sketch comedy open mic night.
