Top CrossFit Studios In Philadelphia

Cross training helps prevent injuries and builds muscle groups through tailored exercise routines, but when it comes to fitness, one size does not fit all. There are literally hundreds of health clubs, gyms and fitness studios that offer cross-fitness training regimens, but not all CrossFit programs are created equal. For an experienced athlete, choosing the best option may be easy, but for the newcomer or novice, these are the best CrossFit gyms in Philadelphia.

While CrossFit Center City is located in a basement, its training programs are considered top notch. Running endurance training supplements daily workout sessions. Designed to increase aerobic endurance, the half-hour classes are taught by experienced sport-runner staff. The training programs are sometimes tailored for an upcoming specific competitive race. Runner-specific mobility training that combine warm ups and drills designed to condition both the body and the mind are included in workouts as well. In addition to the daily workout sessions, CrossFit offers croga, Olympic lifting, CrossFit endurance rowing, gymnastics, squatting and strongman classes.

Offering one-hour classes, as with other CrossFit training programs, beginners must first complete the free on-ramp program. That allows newcomers to CrossFit to learn the movements and terminology of the training. A complete physical and a clearance from a doctor is also required to begin the CrossFit Go Hard program. Coaches here offer a range of skills training for beginners to experienced athletes. The introductory class focuses on air, front and over-head squats, shoulder and push press, push jerk, dead lift, the sumo dead lift that goes to a high-pull, medicine ball and PVC clean workouts, along with training in other skills, including kettlebell, rowing and pushups.

Fearless Athletics began in 2006 by offering an outdoor CrossFit bootcamp training program. In 2007, the company became a CrossFit affiliate offering training outdoors. In 2010, the company moved into its current 4,500-square-foot facility. The training is designed to build strength through a combination of basic gymnastics, Olympic weightlifting, powerlfting, running, rowing, kettlebell work, plus a CrossFit workout of the day. Group training features skilled warmup, strength work and conditioning workout.

If you've ever wondered what it takes to be a Navy SEAL, Platoon Fitness owner Todd Scott and fellow coach SEAL partner Mike Smaltz will gladly provide a taste of strenuous training required. Scott said they were one of the first affiliates of CrossFit training in the area. Platoon offers Evolution, a hybrid CrossFit program that features high-intensity, short-duration training with nationally certified instructors. Evolution classes are limited to 15 people and led by two instructors. Featuring daily outdoor classes, the business began in the basement of a condominium in Rosemont. It now has five outdoor locations and a 10,000-square-foot personal training facility in Bryn Mawr, plus a 4,000-square-foot facility on Walnut Street. The outdoor sessions begin at 6 a.m. year-round, six days a week, in all weather conditions at the the Philadelphia Museum of Art and Rosemont College. The outdoor system boasts 1,115 exercises sequenced to produce safe, but consistent results.

CrossFit Manayunk tells prospective students it "is not your average gym." The facility features the necessary equipment basics, including barbells, kettlebells, rings, climbing rope, pull-up bars and medicine balls. Started in a garage by several friends dedicated to intense training workouts, at the end of 2009, it moved from the garage to a small industrial setting. With more than 150 members, it began with a combination of homemade equipment and a collection of the basics. The gym offers training for beginners to advanced-level athletes.
