Cover bands are usually hit or miss. Some bands completely butcher your favorite song, while others manage to bring it new life. Fortunately, the music scene in Philadelphia is vibrant enough to include some great cover bands that play everywhere from weddings to casinos. With that said, see below for some of the best.
Gypsy Wisdom is a five-member band that plays weddings, corporate events, clubs and casinos. This band is well versed in multiple genres, including pop, alternative, country, rock and R&B. Around Philadelphia, they’ve played at Victory Beer Hall, Tir Na Nog and Mad River Manayunk, just to name a few. The band is well equipped to perform hundreds of covers, including songs by Lady Gaga, Tom Petty and Green Day.
The Heartbeats have been one of the most sought after cover bands for more than two decades and play over 200 shows a year. The band features both male and female vocalists, as well as a full rhythm and horn section, and their covers are hailed for sounding so similar to the original artists. The band plays weddings, private parties, casinos and nightclubs, and their song selection is varied, from today’s top 40 to ’40s standards and even country tunes.
Jumper has been a Philly cover band for more than a decade and even won VH1’s “Cover Band Wars” competition, which was hosted by Paul Shaffer of “The Tonight Show with David Letterman.” The band plays a diverse set, including oldies, classic rock, ’80s, ’90s and current popular music. This group plays up and down the East Coast, but especially in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Catch them as a duo with just guitarists Tim and JT at local joints like the McFadden’s and Landmark Americana, or as a full band at casinos, bars and clubs. The band also plays wedding and private events.
