KYW Newsradio will be hosting a group of five middle school students during the Democratic Convention, getting their first taste of journalism.

The Rendell Center for Civics and Civic Engagement has teamed with the Philadelphia School District, selecting a total of 25 middle school and high school students to cover the DNC.

“We decided we wanted to leave a legacy in young people, so we decided to recruit and have a contest about young people who wanted to be reporters,” said Former Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell, who is Chair of the 2016 DNC Host Committee.

“We had over 400 applicants, and we picked the best 25. Five are 8th graders [assigned to KYW] and the other 20 are in high school.”  Several print and broadcast outlets are participating in the program.

The students went through a media training ‘boot camp’ to prepare, hearing from professional journalists like KYW Community Affairs Reporter Cherri Gregg and Social Media Editor Melony Roy. KYW’s “Youth News Team” will be directed by KYW reporter Kristen Johanson during DNC week.  Their observations and stories will be heard on KYW Newsradio, including on the 12:30 p.m. edition of Reporters Roundup, being broadcast live from PoliticalFest at the Convention Center.
