Boaters, Motorists Reminded To Drive Sober Over Fourth Of July Holiday
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – As the holiday weekend approaches, PennDOT, the U.S. Coast Guard, and other first responders are reminding people to drive sober on the roads and on the water. On Thursday morning on the Delaware River, a Philadelphia Police Marine Unit held a mock demonstration of what happens when they catch someone boating under the influence.
"The Philadelphia Fire Department is glad to have so many partners capable of responding with us to water emergencies. Ideally, however, such incidents would never occur. Please, boat safely," said Philadelphia Fire Commissioner Adam K. Thiel.
Police and first responders will be mobilizing to watch for impaired driving through Monday, July 4.
AAA predicts 47.9 million people will travel 50 miles or more from home over the holiday weekend, an increase of 3.7% over 2021.
The biggest surprise is car travel is expected to set a new record despite the high gas prices.
AAA wants people to be prepared as crowded roads are expected.
