Police: Young Man Wearing Burger King Uniform Shot In Head, Killed In West Oak Lane
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A man was shot in the head and killed in Philadelphia's West Oak Lane section overnight. Now police are searching for up to four men who may be involved.
Detectives say the victim was in his early 20s. He was wearing a Burger King uniform at the time of the shooting.
"I'm not sure why there's so much violence," neighbor Tiketta McIntyre said.
"It didn't sound like firecrackers, I've heard bullets before," neighbor Ellis Allen said.
Neighbors describe the terrorizing moments they heard bullets blasting on the 7100 block of North 19th Street in West Oak Lane around midnight. Spent shell case markings are left behind after the young man was shot and killed.
"Another life lost," Allen said. "There's nothing easy about bullets and they have no names. Absolutely not."
Eyewitness News found officers combing for clues Thursday morning, some looking for security cameras that might have captured the deadly shooting.
"Get the guns out of here. They shouldn't have them," McIntyre said.
A Burger King spokesperson told us in an email: "We're deeply saddened to hear of the fatal shooting that took place involving a team member. Our deepest condolences go out to their family and friends during this devastating time. Through our BK McLamore Foundation, we plan to lend support to the family dealing with this loss."
Early Thursday, officers found a car abandoned near the scene that was reportedly stolen recently during a home invasion and robbery in the northeast.
"So we believe that may be the vehicle that the perpetrator or perpetrators were in," Philadelphia Police Chief Insp. Scott Small said.
Police also say there was something else unusual they discovered.
"Near the spent shell casings, we found two sneakers. The victim is not wearing any sneakers. So we believe these sneakers belonged to the victim and he may have ran out of these sneakers in an attempt to get away," Small said.
This early morning shooting is part of a rising trend of crime that has been plaguing the city during this pandemic. Homicides in the city are way up this year.
On top of that, armed robberies in the city have increased a whopping 25% in the last month alone.
