Philadelphia Police: 53-Year-Old Taxi Driver Critically Wounded In Mantua Shooting

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A 53-year-old taxi driver is in critical condition after he was shot in the stomach early Saturday morning in Philadelphia's Mantua neighborhood. The incident happened around 4 a.m. on the 600 block of North 37th Street, near Spring Garden Street.

A taxi at 37th and Spring Garden Streets was at the center of a police investigation Saturday morning.

"We heard this noise -- like a boom," a neighbor said. "Long, drawn-out scraping noise."

"Taxi on a tree, oh my god. The lights are on and it's not moving, not moving at all. Then minute later, police car come in," another neighbor said.

Police say a cab driver was shot in the stomach during an attempted robbery. He then drove two blocks south when his car jumped the curb and came to a stop against a small tree.

Several hours later, the engine was still running and a shoe was in the middle of the street.

Neighbors say they didn't hear the shooting -- just the car crashing.

"It's scary because this is a pretty good neighborhood," a neighbor said.

A taxi driver who didn't want to be identified showed up to the scene after hearing about the shooting.

He says he does not work late at night to protect himself from incidents like this.

Meanwhile, residents are hoping the victim recovers.

"It's the holiday season. Everyone is trying to get home to their families," a neighbor said.

The victim was taken to Presbyterian Medical Center and placed in critical condition.

No arrests have been made.
